Speaking to Past Trauma

Developmental trauma from younger years — even if we don’t recognize it as such — has lasting impacts into adulthood, affecting not only close intimate relationships, but business, family, and friendships. Previous trauma can be triggered by present circumstances — a disagreement with your spouse, your son acting out, money or work challenges — and come to life without your awareness, and in those moments this younger or exiled part of you is running emotional reactions and compensatory behaviours that were appropriate at that time, but aren’t appropriate in the present moment. This manifests as projection (assuming somebody else is acting, doing, or intending harm to you when they’re not), addictions, emotional dysregulation, and mental health disorders.
Inner child work, reparenting, timeline regression, somatic IFS, and shamanic soul retrieval all share a common root — accessing, befriending, and integrating the aspects of ourselves that have experienced trauma so that they’re not subconsciously ”reliving” the past trauma and hurting your present relationships. I guide you to resolve the roots of patterns like these sabotaging the life you want to live so that you can make new choices and step into the life you’re really wanting. So if you can’t figure out how to “break through”, it’s not because you’re doing something wrong. It’s because accessing these young, painful parts is the key — and you can learn to do it for yourself.
Method | Primary Role | Core "Mechanism" | Goal of the Work |
Inner Child Work | Nurturer | Direct connection with a single, younger version of the self to offer love and validation. | Emotional healing and feeling "seen". |
Reparenting | Provider | The current adult self provides the structure, boundaries, and care that were missing in childhood. | Building self-reliance and emotional stability. |
Timeline Regression | Navigator | Using hypnosis or guided imagery to "travel back" to specific ages or past-life memories. | Finding the root cause of a present-day trigger or block. |
Somatic IFS | System Leader | Identifying multiple "parts" (Exiles, Protectors) and sensing where they live in the body. | Unburdening parts so the "Self" can lead the internal system. |
Shamanic Soul Retrieval | Mediator | A practitioner enters an altered state to find and return "lost soul fragments" (inner children). | Returning vital energy and spiritual wholeness to the person. |
Gestalt / Empty Chair | Experiencer | Engaging in a present-moment dialogue between two conflicting sides of the self. | Integrating fragmented experiences into a cohesive "whole". |
The Common Thread
While the labels differ, the magic in all these modalities comes from when what I call your authentic self learns to step back to the helm of the ship, so to speak, and can tend these younger, fragmented parts of you so that they mature and are able to fully reveal their gifts in your life. Instead of pushing away the pain associated with these moments in time, we recognize pain as a messenger and follow it as an access point to wholeness.
